Adrenocorticotropic acid (ACTH) is a polypeptide tropic hormone of the anterior pituitary gland released in response to stress. ACTH induces cortisol release and functions in circadian rhythm. Deficiencies or overproduction of ACTH are related to a number of diseases including Cushing's Syndrome, Addison's Disease, and impairments of the pituitary gland and hypothalamus.
