SMO (Smoothened) is a Frizzled Receptor that associates with the Patched protein to mediate the cellular response to the Hedgehog secreted protein signal. This controls patterning and growth during vertebrate development. SMO is activated in a number of human tumors. It can function as an oncogene in basal-cell carcinomas, and is a target of various inhibition therapies. In immunohistochemistry, SMO has moderate membranous and cytoplasmic positivity in a majority of tissues throughout the body.
