S100B (S100 beta) is a member of the S100 protein family that modulates cell responses by functioning as an intracellular calcium sensor as well as an extracellular factor. Antibodies to S100B are useful as markers for neural crest derived tissues such as Schwann cells, melanocytes and astrocytes. S100B is also found in apocrine and eccrine glands of the skin, adipocytes, chondrocytes, dendritic cells, Langerhans cells, macrophages, and myoepithelial cells. Positive staining is observed in a variety of tumors derived from these cell types.
