CDH2 (also called cadherin 2) is a member of the cadherin superfamily of cell-surface proteins. It is a transmembrane protein that is involved in cell-to cell adhesion. CDH2 is involved in the development of many systems including left-right asymmetry, the nervous system, and heart. It is broadly expressed at certain stages during development. In adults, CDH2 is expressed in neural tissue, retina, endothelial cells, mesothelium, fibroblasts, myocytes, osteoblasts, limb cartilage, oocytes, spermatids, and Sertoli cells. In the heart, it is localized to intercalated discs in cardiomyocytes. Altered expression or integrity of CDH2 is associated with various diseases such as dilated cardiomyopathy and cancer metastasis.
