TLL2 encodes a Metallopeptidase M12A type protease that is structurally similar to bone morphogenic protein 1 (BMP1) and Drosophila Tolloid ( TLD). In vitro studies have identified pro-lysyl oxidase as a substrate for TLL-2 protein. Fetal TLL-2 is expressed in developing mouse skeletal muscle and central nervous system. Unlike other family members, BMP-1 and TLL-1, TLL-2 does not process procollagen C-propeptides nor does it cleave Chordin and it is not expressed at high levels in developing mouse skeletal elements.
