PTP zeta 1, a R5 receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase, is a central nervous system specific receptor phosphatase that has been shown to affect axon guidance, cell interactions, maintenance and plasticity of synaptic structure and functions, and neurite outgrowth during nervous tissue histogenesis. PTP Zeta has both transmembrane and cytosolic isoforms. PTPRZ1 is induced in multiple sclerosis lesions and expressed in remyelinating oligodendrocytes in these lesions, implicating PTPRZ1 in oligodendrocyte survival and recovery from demyelinating disease.
