Rhizopus arrhizus is a human infectious filamentous fungus and is a common cause of the disease mucormycosis. In contaminated soils and water, R. arrhizus can be used for the bioremediated removal of thorium or uranium via biosorption of the metals by the fungal cells (Journal of Scientific & Industrial Research. 2005. Vol 64, pp 93-100.). WSSA is an acronym for the water-soluble somatic antigens from the fungus used as a target for antibody production (PMID 8801711).
