OATP8 belongs to the multigene superfamily of organic anion transporting polypeptides that mediate the sodium independent uptake of a host of organic anionic compounds. OATP8 has been shown to transport sulfobromophthalein and 17-beta-glucuronosyl estradiol. OATP8 shows 80% sequence identity to OATP-C, however it does not transport some of the bile acids that OATP-C transports.
