Solute Carrier Family 6 (Neurotransmitter Transporter, Glycine), Member 9 (Slc6a9) is also known as Glycine Transporter type 1 (GlyT1). Glycine is a major postsynaptic inhibitory neurotransmitter. It acts by increasing the chloride channel conductance of target neurons. GlyT1 functions in the reuptake of glycine from the synaptic cleft by transporting glycine in a sodium/chloride dependent manor. The glycine transporter type 1 gene encodes 3 variants that differ in their N-termini and tissue distribution.
