Little is known about this recently identified family member; its substrate(s) and physiological significance have yet to be determined. NTT5 contains an open reading frame of 736 amino acids, and shares approximately 50% homology with the other orphan transporter v7-3. NTT5 mRNA is found predominantly in non-neural tissues. Interestingly, the majority of NTT5 protein is found cytoplasmically, perhaps on vesicles. This raises the possibility that this family member is unique in that it does not mediate transport across the cell surface, but some other subcellular membrane. Another possibility is that this transporter is usually sequestered in vesicles until particular signals trigger its movement to the plasma membrane.
