Slc18a2 (Solute carrier family 18 (Vesicular monoamine), Member 2), is also known as VMAT2 (Vesicular monoamine transporter 2) or SVMT (Synaptic vesicular monoamine transporter, brain) or SVAT (Synaptic vesicular amine transporter, brain). This transporter supports the accumulation of cytosolic monoamines by synaptic vesicles. Its function is essential for the correct activity of the monoaminergic brain system. Reduced expression of the Slc18a2 is associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders, such as dementia with Lewy bodies, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Slc18a2 transporter is a site of action of important drugs, including reserpine and tetrabenazine.
