Sipa 1 (signal-induced proliferation associated gene 1) is a mitogen-induced GTPase activating protein. It exhibits specific GAP activity for Ras-related regulatory proteins Rap1 and Rap2, but not for Ran or other small GTPases. Sipa1 may also hamper mitogen-induced cell cycle progression when abnormally or prematurely expressed. Sipa 1 has been found in the nucleus, cytoplasm and perinuclear regions, but most in the perinuclear membranous region. The same isoform is encoded by two splice variants.
