Retinoic X receptor beta (RXR beta), a NR2 Hepatocyte NF4-Like Receptor, has been shown in animals to affect spermatogenesis, cardiac development, and locomotive functions. RXR beta binds to target DNA as either a homodimer or a heterodimer by forming complexes with other nuclear receptors, including retinoic acid receptor, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, thyroid hormone receptor, and others. Two protein isoforms that differ in their N-termini have been isolated from humans; three isoforms (mRXR beta1, mRXR beta2, and mRXR beta2E) have been isolated from mouse. Altered RXR beta levels have been shown in human breast cancer, pancreatic ductal cancer, prostatic adenocarcinoma, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and gastric carcinogenesis.
