PPEF-1, a RdgC type serine/threonine phosphatase, is homologous to the Drosophila retinal degeneration C gene (rdgc) which is required to prevent light-induced retinal degeneration. However, elimination of PPEF function does not result in retinal degeneration in vertebrates. PPEF/RdgC subfamily members are characterized by C-terminal EF-hands (i. e., two or more EF-hand calcium-binding motifs). Mammalian PPEF proteins are expressed mainly within the nervous system and enriched in a subset of primary sensory neurons. They are believed to regulate calcium-dependent rhodopsin dephosphorylation. At least five PPEF-1 isoforms have been identified.
