Targeting of newly synthesized lysosomal enzymes in many cell types depends on formation of mannose 6-phosphate residues on lysosomal enzymes and recognition of these residues by specific receptors. The cation-dependent mannose 6-phosphate receptor is one of the two transmembrane proteins involved in transport of lysosomal enzymes. Binding of ligands to this receptor is dependent on divalent cations and pH. This receptor is used for intracellular targeting but not for endocytosis of lysosomal enzymes. It is composed of two identical subunits.
