Cathepsin O (CTSO) is a putative proteolytic enzyme involved in cellular protein degradation and turnover. The recombinant form of CTSO was shown to degrade synthetic peptides typically used as substrates for cysteine proteinases and its proteolytic activity was abolished by an inhibitor of cyteine proteinase. The mechanistic studies combined with the structural features, including the active site cysteine residue, suggests that cathepsin O is a member of the cysteine proteinase family.
