Lactosylceramide (LacCer, CDw17) is a bioactive lipid found on the plasma membrane of phagocytes and epithelial cells with functions in the immune response and inflammation. It is important as a precursor to sulfatides and gangliosides. In the immune system, LacCer is involved in superoxide generation and also in neutrophil migration and phagocytosis via LacCer-enriched lipid rafts (PMID 26609196, PMID 27729551). Furthermore, lactosylceramide has the ability to bind to some microorganisms (PMID 30175814). There is evidence that lactosylceramide contributes to multiple sclerosis disease progression (PMID 25295934).
