Kidney cysteine conjugate beta-lyase (kyneurenine aminotranferase 1) metabolizes the cysteine conjugates of certain halogenated alkenes and alkanes to form reactive metabolites that can produce nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. KAT1 also catalyses the reversible transamination of glutamine to oxoglutaramic acid and converts kynurenine into kynurenic acid (KYNA), a broadspectrum antagonist at ionotropic excitatory amino acid receptors. It exists in a cytosolic and a mitochondrial form due to the presence of KAT1 mRNAs coding for proteins with and without leader sequences.
