A gene encoding a low-molecular-weight GTP-binding protein was isolated and mapped to human chromosome 17q12-q21. Comparison of the predicted protein with the protein databases revealed striking homology to the family of ADP-ribosylation factors (ARFs), which are thought to be involved in membrane trafficking and protein secretion (Smith et al., 1995). In situ hybridization analysis of the gerbil homologue of human ADP-ribosylation factor 4L(ARF4L)indicated that the expression of ARF4L mRNA was elevated in neurons of the dentate gyrus (DG) and CA1 regions ( Katayama et al., 1998).
