ALK7, a Activin/TGFb type protein kinase, is a member of the Nodal signaling pathway, which is implicated in developmental events such as mesoderm formation and left-right axis specification. ALK7 is a type I receptor that has been shown to collaborate with activin receptor type 2B (ActRIIB). A constitutively active form of ALK7 has been shown to increase phosphorylation of Smad2, a receptor-regulated signaling protein which translocate to the nucleus to activate transcription. Smad3 also is believed to be a target of ALK7.
