5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) is DNA pyrimidine nitrogen base and a modified form of cytosine, and it plays a role in switching genes on and off in epigenetics. 5-hmc is found at varying levels in all mammalian cells, and it is most abundant in neuronal cells in the central nervous system. It is also found in embryonic stem cells. The amount of 5-hmc increases with age. It is generated by oxidation of 5-methylcytosine via TET-family 5-mC hydroxylases.
Target Name: | 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine |
