GABRA3 (Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha-3) is a receptor for GABA inhibitory neurotransmitters. In the brain, GABRA3 expression is correlated with reelin + neurons and to some extent with calbindin + pyramidal neurons. GABRA3 is thought to exert pro-inflammatory actions when dysregulated and this may be a contributing factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease and also Autism. GABRA3 is also aberrantly expressed in some breast cancers (it is normally exclusive to the brain), and is thought to contribute to invasion and metastasis. In immunohistochemistry, GABRA3 is primarily expressed in the cerebral cortex and throughout the central nervous system.
