Calponin (CNN1) is a smooth muscle protein with functional roles in proliferation, angiogenesis and migration (O’Kelly, 2008). It is a negative regulator of smooth muscle contraction via its inhibition of actomyosin interaction. As a marker, calponin is used to identify myoepithelial cells. It stains positively in the cytoplasm around the nucleus in myoepithelial cells, stromal myofibroblasts, and vascular smooth muscle.
