BMP6 (Bone morphogenetic protein 6, VGR) is a TGF-beta family bone morphogenetic protein that functions to induce bone and cartilage growth. BMP6 can induce osteogenic differentiation and activates numerous osteogenic markers in mesenchymal stem cells. High levels of BMP6 have been found in brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients, impairing neurogenesis and neural progenitor cell proliferation and potentially contributing to reduced cognitive function. In immunohistochemistry, BMP6 is positive in plasma and has cytoplasmic expression in most tissues throughout the body.
