SLC11a1 (Solute carrier family 11 (Proton-coupled divalent metal ion transporter), member 1), better known as NRAMP1 or NRAMP (Natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1)), is a proton-coupled divalent ion transporter. This molecule is essential for maintaining a natural resistance to infections caused by a variety of intracellular parasites such as Mycobacteria, Salmonella, or Leishmania. The association between NRAMP1 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to infectious and other diseases has been extensively studied. Allelic variants of the NRAMP1 may modify the risk of tuberculosis, leprosy, autoimmune disorders, etc.
